Our Surgical Practice

The surgeons of Hartford Transplant Associates have special expertise in transplant surgery and hepatico-pancreatico-biliary surgery, but are also trained general surgeons, actively engaged in performing a wide gamut of general surgical procedures.

Transplant Surgery

The Hartford Transplant Associates have been performing solid organ transplants continuously for over 35 years. We are one of the busiest transplant multi-organ transplant centers in New England. We currently perform kidney, liver and pancreas transplants. Our liver transplant patients fortunately enjoy the shortest wait list times in the Northeast. We are the only transplant center in Connecticut performing laparoscopic donor nephrectomies. This allows our kidney donors to recover more quickly than they would with a standard open operation.

Dialysis Access Surgery

Our surgeons perform hundreds of dialysis access procedures each year. We perform these procedures more frequently than any other surgical group in the Northeastern United States. The specific procedures performed include:

  • Creation of new arteriovenous fistulas and grafts
  • Revision of poorly functioning dialysis fistulas and grafts
  • Catheter based minimally invasive intravascular surgery:
    • fistulograms with angioplasty
    • Insertion of peritoneal dialysis catheters
    • Laparoscopic repositioning of poorly functioning peritoneal dialysis catheters
    • Insertion of temporary and permanent Dialysis catheters.

Specialized Surgery of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts

All of the surgeons in Hartford Transplant Associates have completed two year fellowships in hepatobiliary and transplant surgery over and above the standard general surgery training. We are the best trained surgical group in the region in liver, pancreas, and biliary surgery. We perform:

  • Open and laparoscopic liver resections
  • Radiofrequency ablation, and cryoablation of liver tumors
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Repair of bile duct injuries
  • Resection of biliary cysts and tumors
  • Pancreatic resections including Whipple procedure and distal pancreatectomy
  • Portosystemic shunts for portal hypertension
  • Denver shunts
  • Chronic pancreatitis procedures (Peustow, cyst-enterostomy)

General Surgical Procedures

Hartford Transplant Associates surgeons are all certified by the American Board of Surgery and fully trained in general surgical procedures. We perform a variety of general surgical procedures despite our specialized interest in transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and renal disease surgery. Procedures performed include: Thyroid and parathyroid resection, hernia repair, abcess drainage, bowel resections, skin and soft tissue tumor excision.

Minimally Invasive (laparoscopic) Surgery

The Hartford Transplant Associates surgeons are regional leaders in several modern laparoscopic techniques. These include:

  • Laparoscopic liver surgery (resection and ablation)
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy
  • Laparoscopic lymphocele drainage
  • Laparoscopic repositioning of peritoneal dialysis catheters
